Hi, I just picked up a little 4.5 for my boat..My question is,Does the exaust go thru the prop or out a hole under the rear of the engine? Also i don't get any water outa the pee hole,Although i do get a little smoke coming out the pee hole,Is this normal and just a bad impeller?? Thanks..Jim

Water is a must from the Tell Tail.
Exhaust exits through the small holes in the leg and through the prop.

Lets get that water pump torn apart...and, if the problem does not lie there, pull the exhaust cover off the side and check for a blown gasket.

Thanks TMD, I have some smoke coming from a HOLE in the bottom rear,Looks like a little nub..I did pull the lower end and the impeller IS BAD.I got it on order..I'm still curious about the exhaust flow since i don't see an exhaust pipe running thru the lower case..Thanks again...Jim

The exhaust just goes staight down the leg, no pipes needed. The water from the engine mixes with it to help cool as it runs down. You can confirm what I have just said by putting your hand on the leg while the engine is running, it will be quite warm.
