  • Performance issues

I have a 1998 40/30 jet that I have had since new. It is a good running engine that hasn't caused me any issues or money over the years.
    So, what are my issues?
    1) I just, for the first time changed my spark plugs. The old ones looked fine and the motor ran strong with them, just decided to change them.
I bought the recommended plugs and verified the gap (.040) and installed them. Since doing this about two weeks ago I noticed the sound of the engine to be slightly different. It sounds like it is running rich. Performance wise it seems okay but the sound difference bugs me.
    2) Ever since new when I started the engine, after the initial start of the year, I hardly ever had to start the engine cold by using the cold start procedure where the center button on the shifter was pushed and the trottle moved forward. Now it seems (even prior to the above new plugs being installed) I almost always must use the cold start procedure. In addition, I should note, prior to this being an issue, I could just barely turn the key and the engine would come to life. Now it seems to want to crank a few seconds before starting.
I have done nothing to the engine except as noted above, and this issue started about a month or so before the above maintenance. In fact, I could let the engine sit shut down for many hours while fishing or docked and then hit the key for an instant start.
I spoke to the shop about the difference in sound as stated in 1 above. He said I should change my oil (it is oil injected) from Pennzoil (which I have always used) as it has a high ash content and could foul the plugs. I dispute this as evidenced by 11 years of running problem free.
Any ideas or solutions would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Myles
