  • Cooling issues

I have a 1998 40/30 jet on a Basstracker Panfish that I have had since new. From day 1 I have experienced some sort of cooling issues. I put up with it until this past weekend where I had to shut down and interrupt my fishing.
What would happen is this: A good stream of water would come out of the telltale to let me know I was good to go, but, on occasion the stream would just trickle out or none at all. During the runs of course I wouldn't notice it but when I go to shut down I always check this. My alarm would only come on on a few rare occasions so of course then I would worry. Sometimes it was only a matter of poking a wire in the telltale hose and it would open up just fine.
Usually after a run on the river I would hook up the garden hose to the flush connection on the lower unit. After starting the motor it would have a nice solid stream. Upon entering the river the next time I would again experieince no flow or just a trickle most times. Other times it was just fine.
As stated, this is an 11 year issue. I finally broke down last year and had the water pump impeller changed out at an authorized shop. They told me the impeller wasn't in bad shape but to change it every other year. Which I will begin to do.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what the issue is or how to correct this problem? Thank you.
