  • Low voltage until high RPMs..

I have an older, carbureted mercury (87 - 96--was told when i bought it, it was 96 but NO new parts have been) that is having idle problems. I was told the experts give advice here so this is the deal...

When I start my engine cold, it sounds fine. When she warms up and the RPMs drop, the volt meter shows it drops down to 1-2 volts on pistons #2,4,6 but has 4-5 volts on 1,3,5 as it idles. As I rev the engine in neutral, the voltage increases on 2,4,6 and coils start working. When she is in neutral, her RPMs spike every 15 - 30 seconds when they drop too low. When I put it in gear, it sounds rough until suddenly, you feel all cylinders come on and you feel a jolt from the engine. When I accelerate, it must have all cylinders because she flies just like she did before this problem. I have replaced the throttle trigger new and it still does this. I think my old mechanic replaced one or both power packs before but I am not sure. PLEASE help me solve this problem and get back to seeing you guys back on the water. Thanks and God bless!!!

Not sure what horsepower motor you have but it may have a idle speed controller that causing you problems. Not sure where you are getting the volt readings from?

Sorry about that! It is a Mercury 150. It says XR6 on the cowling but once again, not sure about that either. Thanks for the help and reply also. Any other ideas or suggestions are ALWAYS welcomed! God bless!!!
