  • Mercury 9.8 help

I have a 9.8 mercury and it takes me about 10 to 15 pulls to get it fired up, and I have to basically flood it till gas shoots out the front before it will start. Any Suggestions ???

Can you supply the year or serial #? as they made the 9.8 from mid 1960's till about 1985. There are 3 styles of carbs and that is why I am asking for this information.

That engine has a Walbro series carb(see attached breakdown) and is very picky about set-up. If the carb has not been cleaned lately I would clean it an install new gaskets and needle and seat. If it has been serviced lately here are things to look for:
          1) Cable is pulling and holding choke shutter completely closed
          2) No air leaks around plugs # 2 and #41, wipe some grease over them to see if it cures problem, if so they will have to be resealed.
          3) Idle mixture screw set to lean (1-1/2 to 2-1/4 turns out)
          4) Float level set to lean
          5) Engine angle incorrect, needs to be level or tucked under to start

ok thank you I will try that. I have one more question though. I took out the lower unit to replace the water impeller and when i put it back in i cannot shift the lever into the reverse position, any idea ??

The shift shaft turned when you reinstalled unit, drop unit slightly so you can access shift shaft and turn it to neutral, put handle in nuetral and slip unit back up, if it wont line up rotate flywheel by hand to algin driveshaft splines. When I replace a impeller on these I usually turn them(engine) upside down as less struggle..
