I was wondering if anyone besides myself was having problems with the ignition coils on the older 25hp motors. I have a 1984 25XD and I keep having to replace the coils. I may have stumbled onto the problem but it is to early to tell. I had an original Mercury coil from an old motor and examined the ferrite coil and found that it was glued together. It comes in two halves. I read on another site that the two halves must stay right together or the coil will misfire. The new aftermarket coils are only held together by tape. When the tape gets hot the glue in the tape slips and the ferrite halves slip and your coil quits. I used superglue on mine and today they performed well all day in 100 degree weather. Only glue the outside. If you glue the round part on the inside I fear it will lose contact and the coil will not work. This had been giving me fits for several years now. It seems like such a simple thing but it looks like someone besides me would have run across it. Anyone?
