1960's fuel pump????

does anyone know how much fuel pressure the carb's require on a merc m500 50 hp and if i might be able to completly get around rebuilding the original diaphram pump mabee by using a low pressure 12v electric fuel pump. would this eaven be possible or would i be wasting my time i have an electric pump and i don't have a lot of money any help would be great
