  • 1999 75 HP ELPTO top cyl not firing

This season for 4 trips out I have not been getting good holeshot and plane and upon inspection of the plugs the top cyl is not firing (clean plug and wet with fuel). I changed out to new plugs recently and still have same problem so I have eliminated the plug as the culprit.

I have looked up to see that there are coil packs and separate plug wires that are connected to the packs. How do I check the wire and coil to diagnose the problem. Can I do a swap out with other coils and wires to check by process of elimination or can you check electrically easier?

    Thanks!!

You can see if the coil wire can jump a 3/8" gap or you can use a timing light on it under load. It's easy enough to swap the coils (CDI) to verify the failure. The coils are usually the problem

      Plug Wire?

This coincided with a change to new plugs......its making me believe its a plug wire problem. I think I'll swap the suspect wire to a different cylinder and see if the problem follows.

Is there an easy way to check it with earmuffs on it in my driveway? Right now I have just used visual inspection of new plugs after running for a while (carbon on 2 cyls plugs and clean and wet on top cyl plug).

        More info

Wire had continuity basically no resistance. Coil primary resistance .05 and secondary 875

Coil below it was .04/.05 primary - did not check secondary.

As said top plug has been clean w no carbon and wet w fuel and other 2 have carbon.

          Done!

Coil changed and spark tested - DONE!
