oxidized black rubber tiller handle

I have a 2006 15hp 4 stroke and a 2008 8hp 4 stroke, On both motors the black rubber tiller handle has degraded such that whenever I operate either motor my hand is covered with a black residue from the handle.

A couple of questions:

- Has this happened to anyone else?
- Is there a way to clean it or do I have to change the grip?
- was a recall ever issued?

Would have to replace them, usually can't clean that good. Might try putting a canvas cover over motor to protect them from sun.
