On a 2004 Merc 15HP 2 stroke, how do I remove the horizontal shift shaft?
It became very difficult to shift into or out of gear using the twist throttle. I ruled out the lower unit by disconnecting the shift rod and manually moving the rod. It shifted fine with no binding. I then removed the primary and secondary shifting gears and the rod connecting to the horizontal shift shaft and discovered the shaft was partial frozen. Working a wrench back and forth and some WD40 has loosened it, but I want to remove it to clean and inspect. On the rod side, everything is disconnected. On the right side (cable side) there doesn't appear to be any fasteners. It looks like the shaft is pressed into a tab that is part of the block.
Is it as simple as pulling with vice grips?
Thanks
Bill
