Serial Number Help

Can someone help me? I have a 1978 mercury outboard the serial Number on it is 5001488 but I have been told that's not right. What am I missing? I have checked and checked but this is the serial #

What horsepower is it?

I believe it is a 90 hp

if it helps it says 1978 m-800 on it.

90 hp inline 6 cylinder with that serial number is a 1978 model year.

Great, Thank you for the info. My question for you now is why cant I look it up through a serial number search? it always says invalid or not found

Just looked at the engine again its a 4cyl

The older models were never converted to a serial number table.
