I have 1985 75 hp motor I replaced the water pump on it now I can't get in the right spot to make the gears to work

Place the shifter into forward, then rotate the shift shaft on the lower unit to engage into forward. Hold tension on the prop as you slide the lower unit up to keep the gear engaged. Capture the lower unit with a couple of nuts. Go back to the shifter and place it into neutral and verify. Don't force the shifter if it doesn't want to go, that means you went the wrong way with the lower shift shaft. (The tension on the prop needs to be opposite of what the prop spins.) When the everything is happy then install the remaining hardware and go fishing. Hope this helps
