mercury 6 hp lower bearing and seal

I just changed the bearing and seal on my trolling motor, as i put it back together neutral is now where reverse was, is there a position i need to have it in when i put it back together to have the right gear selection positions? Whats the trick here?

Put gearcase and shifter in neutral before putting gearcase back on.
