shifter alignment 75hp 3cyl

i'm sure this is an old one but here goes... after successfully replacing the impleller -i had the shifter coupling misaligned - it got cracked on start up -no major damage but and i only had fwd gear after dropping the unit again - i have been told to get the lower shift mechinism/coupling in the mid point of its travel (roughly 180 deg total) , put the hand throttle/gear shifter in neutral, then reassemble the lower unit. -- does this sound right - the forums i have researched so far on line seem to be coming from true experts on this, but I just can't understand what they are saying specifically.

Yes put gearcase and controls in neutral, should be able to turn prop when in neutral.
