  • Mercury vs. Toshatu parts

    Hello!

I have a question I am hoping one of you can answer. I recently picked up a 2006 Mercury 4-stroke 8 HP (209cc). It had a ticking noise when running when I bought it. Although I suspected valves, it sounded more like the noise was coming from the block. The valves were out of spec, so I adjusted them but the noise went unchanged. I have dis-assembled the block and found the crank/connect rods have some play to them. The journals on the crank shaft measure out well within range, so it looks like the softer aluminum of the connect rod integrate bearing has warn. I went to buy a set of connect rods and found they are about $95 each through this site. My understanding is Tohatsu makes this motor for Mercury - and although there are some differences, the internals of the Tohatsu 8 hp engine are the same. The schematics on boats.net for both motors are identical as well. The reason I ask is the Tohatsu parts for their 2006 8 HP are about 25% less than the same Mercury parts. Can I just order the Tohatsu connect roads and gaskets?

They probably are the same but Mercury doesn't list exactly what parts are same and what is different so can't say for certain that are the same.
