My engine idle fine and rev out well in Neutral. However when I put it in forward gear or reverse the engine shut down. Any suggestions what could be happening?

Run a compression test. If it's a carb model may need to clean carbs, check for fire on all cylinders.Regards

Check your lower unit oil. If your loosing a bearing the extra drag is killing it. Assuming it's Ok, Try pulling the plug wires back one at a time and listening for the "snap" I have a pair of pliers that have a ground wire attached to it. It serves two purposes, one to prevent damage to the coil if I pull to far back. (the spark will jump thru the boot and ground as opposed to internal to the coil) and Two it hurts a lot less it you pull the wire back to far and the spark jumps thru the boot to you. (which ironically is better for the coil)
I guess there's a third "pro" when you drop the pliers, it's tethered to the motor. Lets know what you find.
