  • Not charging enough 2006 50hp 4 stroke

    Hello,
My old battery was changed out by a repairman with a new battery and I noticed dash amp. gauge did not read charging at 13.5 anymore but more like 11.5. after that. Have used boat a couple of times and dash amp gauge looks like now reading 10.5 to 11. When returning from 2mi. trip last night engine sounded 3 long beeps and I continued to dock with no more beeps or problems. Changed impeller last year and water coming out strong. Thinking I may have a charging problem? Read a post where someone said they had a Suppression diode problem (if My engine has one? and it was bad.. would I still get a reading in my dash gauge at all? or would it read 0 charge?) or do I have a voltage reg. or alternator problem or fuse problem maybe.
    Thank you for any help,
    WIMPY

If the panel is showing less than 13 volts than your battery is not taking a charge, it might be why you needed to change the battery in the first place. There is the off chance that the mechanic started to connect the new battery backwards and caused damage to the charging circuit. More than 12.5 volts charges a battery, start by checking any fuses by the battery terminals. Your serial number helps in trouble shooting, hope this helps.

I'm thinking that any blown fuses would not allow any reading on dash gauge at all. Hoping someone had this happen to them in the past (low reading on dash gauge) and let me know what they had to do to fix it. Battery was switched out while mechanic was repairing engine coil
problem ( I assume he ran starting battery dead and switched out with my new charged trolling motor battery) When I got boat back I noticed It was only
charging at 11.5 and then I found out he switched battery. (He didn't tell me he switched battery) Also if battery was fully charged before every trip
I'm assuming I wouldn't have any problems. Battery only used to start engine and power dash gauges Avg trip I start engine 6/8 times a day and run 10 miles. I'll check fuses and start there...........Thanks for getting back with me.

I would also use a meter and check the voltage at the battery. Any poor connections in the harness to the gauges would lower the indication. The fuses I would look at first are the ones under the cowl (if any) and check the voltage at the alternator or regulator. A serial number would be helpful
