25 hp 2005 mercury water pump

It seems that it takes longer to pee water than it did before. I have to put it in gear and rev it up for about 10 seconds. It begins by spitting a little before it puts out powerful stream. I know about pump being under water. Question: How long can motor run without priming pee before motor is damaged by heat?

Engine overheats at about 190-200 degrees, sounds like need to replace water pump.
