I have a 2002 15 hp 4 stroke that will idle just fine but bogs down if given throttle. I put a new carb on it, new fuel filter, new plugs & oil change, replaced a couple of electric terminals/connections that looked questionable, tested & even bypassed the fuel pump and it still bogs down but idles nice & smooth. The fuel is good. The fuel line & bulb are new. I am baffled. Any help will be appreciated.

Merc 15hp 4 stroke problem

Let's all "bog" down
Please read my Merc 500 posting. I have an older Mercury 50hp that has the same symptoms. Actually, we are not alone with this problem. There are other postings with this same issue. It seems like this could be a common problem with at least Mercury outboard motors? I have taken my motor over the years to many Mercury authorized marine shops/mechanics to no avail. They say my motor runs fine when hooked up to the flusher at their shop but this same problem persists when I take my boat to the lake, get it up to normal running temperature, turn it off, wait 15 minutes or so and try to take off again/give it throttle (it bogs down everytime). Now if I use my electric trolling motor, fish for an extended amount of time, and allow my motor to sufficiently cool down then it always starts, takes the throttle (does not bog down)? Does your motor "bog" down even upon initial start up when it is cold (when you get to the lake and first start it up and try to take off)? Have you tried the methods I use in my Merc 500 postings to get your motor to take the throttle after it bogs down? It is a little inconvenient to use these methods but they will get you up and going. Since my 13 and 10 year old grandkids want me to take them fishing I am going to somehow fix this "bogging down" problem oneway or another. With two adults fishing we can get my motor to take the fuel but I don't want to hassle with this issue when it is just my two grandson and myself on the lake. One of our relatives is the head mechanic at the post office, was a mechanic when he was younger in the military, and knows his stuff. He is not an outboard motor mechanic but the fuel system concept is the same. I will ask him what he thinks maybe going on with this bogging issue. I will keep my postings going and get back to you with my findings. Please reply and answer the questions that I have asked you and we will solve our problem. Someone reading our postings may have the solution. Thanks, Papa Ron

May need to remove and clean carb and make sure accelerator pump passages are open and pump working properly.Regards

Thanks for the responses. My 15 hp 4 stroke bogs down even when the motor is cold. It is a brand new carb. It idles perfectly, no missing. I was wondering if there is an oil level sensor that would keep the motor from running above idle if it senses low oil levels. My oil level is good but if the sensor is bad it night work to keep the motor from revving up.
We bypassed the fuel pump with a squeeze bottle of fuel and the problem is not the fuel. I think it has to be some electrical component that is bad.
I have not read your thread, Ron, but I will today.
