All the fuel fittings need to be air tight. 1/4" fuel line should be adequate.

The numbers on the spark plugs are the heat range, the hotter the plug the cleaner it be. To hot and the the motor will have detonation problems, to cold and you'll be fouling plugs. I would use the plugs listed in the most current plug catalog. Two stroke engines eat plugs, I usually tell customers to change them first before they bring the boat in. 9 out of 10 times they never call back. (probably because they are pissed ) You should change your plugs first, it might very well be your problem. Enjoy the weekend

Ski, member, once again...THANK YOU for all your help. I did research the correct Champion sparkplug for a Merc500 1969 50hp thunderbolt 2 stroke 4 cylinder outboard motor. iboats.com gave me two options a standard L76V or a QL76V resistor type and Championsparkplugs.com gave me one option the QL76V? I previously bought and still have these unopened L76V plugs. Should I return the L76V plugs and buy the resistor QL76V sparkplugs? Is it beneficial to have a resistor plug? Well, you have given me enough advice to keep me busy for awhile. I will have the mechanic read your replies to my postings then ask him to do these tests. It will possibly take two or three weeks or so to see the mechanic but once the work is done I will submit another posting to let you know if my problem is solved. The weekend is your's, Papa Ron

Bog on down baby---Bog on down: Well, since my engine has not been properly serviced for years, I ordered on-line a new fuel pump housing, a fuel pump rebuild kit, and two carb rebuild kits (all brand new) for under $70 (including tax & shipping). Seems like a very good deal to me and my outboard motor is an older 1969 model. If you need the website for parts for your older motor just post your need on this forum and someone will reply. Once I get everything installed I will take my boat to the lake and see if my motor issue is now resolved and post another thread. Have fun on your boat and GOD be with you. Papa Ron
