I have a 1983 50 Hp Mercury ELPT.
While changing out the water pump, I noticed that inside the lower unit where the pump base sits was contoured. There are raised sections in the area of the bolts.
The pump I removed, 46-77176, appears to have been originally flat on the base, but now indented from the torque and not by the factory.
The replacement pump is also flat on the base.
The mercury shop manual does not show any contour that I can find. It shows a gasket, then the pump base.
It does not make any sense to have a gasket just flapping in the space between the pump base and the lower unit.
Could this be a different lower unit? Any ideas?
