My 1995 20 hp MLH/ALT outboard overheated a few years back due to a defective impeller. The impeller was replaced, a new head gasket was installed, and a year later a new stator was installed, and the motor has performed excellently since. Yesterday, I started it up and noticed that no water was streaming from the outlet at the back of the cowling, yet water was being blown out with the exhaust. Despite my efforts, I could not get the motor to overheat. I suspect that the thermostat is not opening, or the hose is somehow plugged. Does it make sense that the motor would run normally without overheating if such were the case?
