  • mercury 9.8 hp leaking gas

I purchased a Mercury 9.8 hp outboard recently. The serial # is 1637713. The name plate says "Merc 110" I have no idea the year. When I start the motor I get gas dripping from the front of the motor down onto the mounting bracket. It is a constant drip at idle speed. I can't tell where the leak originates because it appears that the motor can't be started with the cover off.

The motor is mounted on the transom of a small boat and tilted up to the last stop on the tilt adjustment in order to fit into the water tank used for testing.

I can find no reference to the 9.8 any where and I'm at a loss as to where to get help. Any help would be appreciated.

    gas leak

Carb Float stuck? Try tapping the top of the carb with a screwdriver handle. Also check for loose hose clamps on the fuel line.
    Good Luck

Check needle end for ethanol crud build-up...may be powdery looking. Flush/blow out seat and orifice with air or cleaner, then reassemble and pressurize with fuel...always works for me!

I have a 1967 110 mercury and it had the same problem, check the fuel line to the carb,on the old one they dry up and leak around the fittings. to find out what year yours is go to www.oldmerccom, your serial number will tell you what year, they sell the replacement fuel line for about 57.00 but I found the same line and fittings at a hardware store and just made my own. hope that helps

          Fuel Leak

If you have not found the problem, you might check the fuel line connector at the motor. The O rings will dry up and break. I recently replaced mine because it was leaking gas. Cost about $15.00 for both sides.
