Disconnect shift shaft fromage uppercut unit

Hello, I have a Mercury 500 outboard motor from 1971. I want to release the upper unit, however the shift shaft is still link to the medium unit. how can I disconnect it?

Not sure what you are trying to do but if trying to remove the upper shift shaft then will need to remove engine to get it out.

Hi,
When I am trying to put away the engine block, the shift shaft "rod" is not disconnect, and make the upper unit "Link" to the middle unit.

Will have to unbolt shift linkage from engine block, I think it has 2 bolts holding on.
