As part of a purchase of a Boston Whaler, I'm now the proud owner of a 1987 Mercury 45 Classic 50 engine. According to PO, the 'engine is toast'. When I asked further, he said that he was running it one day - and it started to run badly and quickly quit. He turned around to see smoke coming from the engine. So, he grabbed the extinguisher and hit the engine with that.
From what I've been able to see so far, the fire (as PO called it - not sure if actual fire or smoke) was related to two wires on the terminal block on the starboard side of the engine. There are two yellow wires where the insulation definitely got hot and melted. My hunch is that they shorted - causing the engine to quit - and likely were hot enough to smoke/flame. This happened back in summer 2007 - hasn't been touched since.
Can someone help me to identify what these yellow wires are? Any thoughts as to why a fuse wouldn't have blown first? I do have pictures if that's useful.
Thanks!
