Retifier/Regulator

I have a 1987 70 HP merc that has a three wire retifier and need to know how to tell if it is regulated or not. Would you just hold a volt meter on fully charged battery while motor is running and read voltage ? or does a regulated retifier have a certain number of wires going to it.

With the motor running the voltage should be above 13 volts.... Some unregulated units may charge 14.5 volts that's why good idea to use marine battery not sealed if its unregulated.

No wonder one of my fish finders said high voltage on the screen and cut off. I wonder if the 9 amp regulator can be regulated or if we have to step up to a 16 amp with new regulator.
