what is the easiest way to remove the rotor without damaging it?

If you are talking about the armature in electric starter then it just pushes out of field, the magnets in field are very strong so will to push hard.Regards

Once get everthing loose from rotor you tap it out, very much recondmended to have a service manual to service distributor as taking apart, putting back togather and installing it correctly is tricky.Regards

No the shaft can be separated from the rotor.Regards
