Serial number crisis

Can someone help me with this serial number crisis I am having. I have a 1978 mercury 1115. There is a serial number punched into a metal plate on the transom mount that never produces results when I enter it in to parts search websites. The number is 5056127. Is this the correct number? Or am I doing something wrong?

Thank you for the link. But what is the trick. Any other website I go to if I type in that number it just gives no results.

A lot of the older motors wont come up in serial number search, just go to horsepower search and look for serial number range that matches your motor serial.

2. 4855153 THRU 5314655 USA - 1150, 115

I too have a Serial Number problem, I have a 15hp older Merc with no serial number anywhere on it that I can see, have inspected the motor from top to bottom with no luck, any ideas?

Without a serial it will be difficult, Mercury has had 15 hp motors since the 70's. Post a picture of it on web to see if anyone can help.
