alternator bad?

I have a 115 efi 4 stroke engine, it quit while I was running and would not restart.Engine would fire then quit,noticed a discoloration on the windings of the alternator and it felt hot. I disconnected the small plug and retried the engine and it restarted. Question I do not have 75 hours on the engine, what would cause the alternator to go bad?

Test regulator to see if bad.

regulator is built into alternator , but never mind it is cover by warranty
