  • Mercury 1500

Hi all I'm new here and have acquired a Merc 1500 longshaft c/w trim. It isn't running and apparently hasn't run in a while but isn't seized. I did a compression test as far and best as I could with a thread in tester #1 cyl has virtually 0lbs reading #2 from memory had at least 90 #3 had around 30lbs #4 & 5 had 100lbs and #6 I could reach as it was at the bottom of the cowl and I didn't have the lower cowl removed to test this cyl but with my finger over the plug hole it seemed to have fair pressure (something at least compared to #1 & 3)
I've also peered into the spark plug hole with a tiny led flashlight and with a screwdriver I can wiggle the piston particularly in #1 quite a bit. When I fist got this unit I attempted to fire it up or at leas see what I might get in the way of ignition. Apparently as I recall I have spark and it did give me one bang and that was it I haven't tried since. I spoke with some others on another forum who suggested that the rings may be stuck and to try soaking the engine in oil and some penetrating oil which i did for several days and tried again but no success. Depending on the amount of damage once torn apart is this motor how much should this motor cost in parts to return to running order, and are there many if any videos on the rebuild procedure. I once had a contact with a mercury parts guy named Larry and have since lost his contact info. Any help and assistance for this would be greatly appreciated. I am a DIY and am fairly handy with tools. Since this is a pretty big motor I think I'd have to fabricate some sort of crane or lifting device to remove the power head as it's currently not attached to a boat.
also this is a Canadian built model from the serial number of 7067458.
