I have an old 25HP 2 stroke Red Band Long shaft outboard, I am trying to drop the bottom leg as the water does not pump through. Have removed the 4 bolts and bottom leg drops about 1 inch and prop goes into gear. I cannot find how to disconnect the gear link rod to allow removal completely. The rod appears to be solid from the bottom leg to the engine just below the carburetor. How do I disconnect this rod and where? Frustrated!!! Thanks

On many models the shift shaft linkage can be disconnect from under the carburetors. If you give a serial number or at least a year I can be of more help.

Many thanks, I will post Engine Number tomorrow. it looks as though I can take a retaining clip off the Linkage below the carburetor but then it must come off with the linkage. The rod goes through a thick wire shaped like a spoon that is attached to a spring loaded arm at end of the middle tube. I just cant see how the linkage can pass through the retaining mechanism (Loop) and even more difficult to get it back up the tube again!I have located via this site the best info i can find via this link- 25 (2 CYL.) Mercury Outboard 0T980000 THRU 0T999999 Gear Housing(Driveshaft)(2.25:1 Gear Ratio) Diagram and Parts It looks the same as mine but gives no other information as to how to remove it. Many thanks in anticipation.

Hi There. The Engine serial number is 9440082 , it appears to be quite old but good condition. Pull start if that helps. Many thanks again.

The serial number did not come up, however if it is that model, then you remove the clip, slide out the pin. Then the unit should drop.

Hi there again, you were quite right I removed The clip, pulled out the pin and sure enough it drops now. Bad news is there are two rusted bolts holding water pump on that the heads are just round! Next problem then but at least I've got the bottom end where I can work on it! Thanks again. Pete
