  • Cracked Power Tilt Trim Mercury Outboard

    Hi Guys,
I am sure this is not a new question but I would greatly appreciate some help in this concern. I have a 1996 Mercury outboard 125 HP and the power tilt cylinder continues to crack on it. It has happened twice now. Very expensive to replace and finally was told yesterday there is a relief valve that needs to be turned before storage. No dealer or any manual I have has ever mentioned this.

Up to of course yesterday. This seems to be a very very common problem as my neighbor it also happened to as well as I have found a variety of examples on the internet and talking to a new dealer.

Is this something Mercury Marine is addressing? I was told by the one dealer that he had received a notification letter and that was it. This is obviously of no help at all to actual motor and boat owners.

My question is can this be welded? it is basically pot metal aluminum and is the shaft for what looks like return oil or overflow.
    2nd: any recourse with Mercury?
3: who is responsible if I have nothing in my manual mentioning this for winter storage and the previous dealer mentioned nothing. Also my neighbor who uses a different dealer had nothing mentioned to him.
    4. It seems like a real "cash cow" for dealers.

Thanks and I would appreciate any options that I should consider.
