  • Help! I cannot start my Mercury 150 hp XR-4 Black Max!!!

Hi everyones! i am a newbie here so don't be too hard on me! I just traded my little boat for a 21 footer Starcraft "Mariner" center console with a Mercury 150 hp XR-4 Black Max and when i went to pick it up, i tried it with the guy and worked just fine. The other day, i wanted to start the motor with the muffs on just to let it run for a while to recheck the impeller water flow and... I couldn't get the engine to start and even whorse, i flooded it real bad!!! Couldn't get it started ever since even with new plugs!!! I disconnected the fuel line and remove the plugs and crank the engine several times to let the excess fuel out of the cylinders and try it again and.....no chance! It seems that by doing so, it was only oil from the injection system that was going in and alot of it!!! How can i get that engine to fires again? Is there a proper way of sequence to start those engine? I have the "Quick Silver controls that came with the engine. Is that a push key primer or a push and hold key as a choke? Thanks.

    Pat.

Check for spark. You should while your at it check compression. varify that there is no water in the fuel.

Ok, i figure it out! Don't do the same mistake i did! When i disconnected the fuel hose from the engine to avoid more gaz going into the engine crankcase, all the time i was cranking the engine to try to expulse the fuel in excess, the oil from the "oil injection system" was still pourring inside the crankcase!!! So the engine was not flooded with fuel but instead with oil!!! So i flushed all three carbs (filled with oil only at that time) i disconnected the "oil injection system" (a good thing that i was going to do anyway) Pre-mixed my fuel and primed the fuel system and all three carbs and......guess what? The engine fired right away after a few burps here and there and after i could see the light of the sun again in my backyard, the engine was running top notch like a new one!!! So don't do the same mistake i did. Thanks again. Can't wait now to go cut the waves on the river!!!
