  • 2008 Merc 40 EFI won't start...

Folks, new guy here. I have purchased a 2008 Sun Tracker with a 4 cylinder 4 stroke Mercury 40 EFI and am having some "issues".....
    S/N is 1C070164
The boat was a re-po so there is no history, altho from all appearances it does not have many hours on it. The re-po guy is very reliable (16 years in the same place selling boats an RVs) and said it started when it came in several months ago, but will not start now.

The high pressure fuel pump was rusted inside the VST, but it doesn't appear any of the bad gas/water ever made it into the fuel lines or injectors. Replaced it. (ouch, that's a LOT of money)

Upon cranking, the alarm gives one beep, then a series of 6 beeps. I only have the service manual (loaned to me by a local marina) but all I have read is the motor should run fine but will need service............

The motor cranks fine, but the MPR is not picking up. Backtracked to the ECM, and it is not pulling the MPR to ground. Jumpered MPR to ground at the ECM, MPR picks up. Jumpered the hot line around the MPR for ease of troubleshooting, and it will not start the fuel pump. (Service manual is wrong, shows the MPR as the BOTTOM relay....on this motor it's the TOP relay. Made my brain ache for several hours troubleshooting the wrong relay!)

Backtracked fuel pump to the ECM, again it is not pulling to ground. Jumpered fuel pump to ground at the ECM, pump works and supplies fuel all the way to the Fuel Distribution Manifold.

Checked ECM's ground to engine ground, it is good. Fuses check good, and the suppression diode checks good.

Being a "trained investigator" it appears to me the ECM is not being told what to do, or is just not doing it....
Any and all help is greatly appreciated!!!

Because of the amount of computers operations, I recommend taking to an authorized Mercury dealer and having the computer system diagnosed.

Disregard, I found the emergency switch had been bypassed and was shorted to ground!
