  • spark coils failing '07 merc 90 hp 2 cycle

Well, bought a used 2007 90 to replace a good working 05 50 hp on a large pontoon. Heard motor run, sounded just fine, rev'ed up just fine, middle of winter so not observed in the water. Helped him remove it from a large river fishing boat claiming 47 mph with a 13x21p ss ported and tuned prop.

Installed on my 2500 lb pontoon with 2 helpers who have done this before. I knew the prop was wrong, but had not yet replaced it. Hit the water, started right up, idled out of the long cove to the big lake, slowly opened it up and it was only running 1600 rpm at wot. Took it out, rechecked all connections, just the one converter plug from 8 to 14 connector plug, all looked fine.

Replaced the two dead spark coils, still ran fine if not under load, next morning took it out, ran 4800 rpm, not the 5500 owner claimed, but acceptable, prob a prop size issue. After about an hour the rpm suddenly dropped to 3600. Checked coils, one was dead. Replaced it, the replaced one was one of the new ones, back on water, 4800 and doing fine, so replaced the prop with a 14x15p, ran just fine, at 4800, top speed about 22mph, 5 more than the 05 50hp. Not as fast as I wanted but it gets out of the hole quickly and steadily, no missing nor bucking.

Ran it 50 miles up and down the big lake, ozarks, on the main channel, stopping for an hour for lunch on the lake at the 11 mile point of the trip, started right up, 4800 again, turned around at about the 25 mile point of the trip, and at the approx 40 mile point of the trip, it suddenly dropped to 3600rpms again. No warning, no sound, just 4800 to 3600. Coils are not cheap and I don't like the down time nor the inconvenience.

Even with 1 or 2 cylinders working, it runs smoothly with no bucking. If I push it up to 5000 rpm, it starts bucking and the tach drops 2-300 rpm off and on, so I just run it at the 4800 or below. At 4000 rpm, it cruises nicely, will go to 4800, but bucks at 5000rpm. When the last coil failed, I was increasing rpm from 4000 to 4800 because it was getting late and we had a 200 mile trip home, and that's when it failed, 10 miles from my dock. Cruised in just fine at 3600 however.

Please, any help, suggestions, things to look for? I would certainly appreciate it. Thanks, Ed.

Is it the same coil every time?

Is it the same coil every time

No, at first upon install, 2 were/went out, they were replaced, then one of the replacements went out, and not sure which one on the 4th coil failure, not yet worked on it. But ONE of the coils has not failed, one has failed twice [one replacement of the new part] and one new one is still working.

The three were working just fine when I bought it, but either failed upon install or were somehow damaged upon initial start up. Don't know which happened. And of course you cannot run a motor on land to determine if all 3 plugs are working since its not under load. Of course its gonna go full bore, nothing to stop/slow it.

So trip 1, first water trip, 1600 rpm, 2 cdm found bad
trip 2, 4800, 3 good, one failed in an hour, 3600 rpm, replaced one of the new cdms under warranty
trip 3, 4800, 3 good cdm, 50 miles, one cdm failed at the 40ish mile of trip, 3600 rpm, was accelerating/accelerated from 4000 rpm to 4800 rpm when the cdm failed, not sure if it was the new one or the old one that came w boat.

      Thanks for the reply, ed

Check the voltage out puts from both the stator and the voltage reg. Maybe there is too much voltage being supplied. Could also be coincidence.

          voltage info

Where would I find what the voltage values should be? Thanks again, ed.

I called mercury and they said to buy a new starting battery, at least 1000 mca? and 800 cca? marine crank amps and cold crank amps. I have a 3 yr old 1000/800 marine battery from o'reilly's that spins the starter like crazy. Does this sugg make sense to you? he claimed doing this always solved multiple cdm failures, in his experience. BS or true???

          Thanks again, ed.

If the battery is insufficient, then yes a low voltage could cause cdm.ecu malfunctions. However I am uncertain if it will destroy coils.

Last trip all was fine at lower rpm

Took the 200 mile trip to the lake last tues, set sail, started right up after 3 tries and did NOT pump up the bulb [hard to reach and just lazy that day and I can hardly reach it, tall overstuffed pontoon], normally an easy start, easier than the 05 50 it replaced.

We did about 40 miles this time with several stops for meals and pit stops etc., kept the rpms at or below 4200, although tempted to wot it, but did not. Absolutely no issues, no bucking, no missing, did 4400 for a minute and thought better of it and slowed back down to 4200. Perfect day perfect ride, no issues, calm waters, idled just fine down our cove, no problems.

At my tiny wit's end on this deal. Called former owner, he claims vehemently that he had no issues with cdms in the 5 years he owned it. Sold it to put a 250 hp on his fishing boat. Mercury model number is 1b361142 and although titled as a 2007 it is labeled a 2006 on the plate just don't know where to go next. Thanks for you time, ed.
