mercury /mariner history question

ok...WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE???? and why did Mercury produce Mariner>>?/ I just found out my "mercury 150" is really a Mariner...the previous owner changed the cowl............

Mariner is actually a Mercury product. Its just there economical brand.
