repair question!

Attempted to replace an aging water pump impeller on my 1998 25hp ELH Merc yesterday. Dropped the lower unit 4 bolts, separated it only to not locate the shift rod disconnect. Looked behind the water screen, not there either. Looked up inside the case and it appears to be a one piece shaft? Looked under the motor cover only to not even be able to see the end of the shift rod there! Ok boys, what the heck did I miss? Please advise! (Model # 1025311UD)

The disconnect should be located under the carburetor.

After looking deeper, I see the disconnect, though the path to it will be fun. Looks like the starter will have to be removed to access it. Thanks again for the info!
