1986 Mercury 200 not charging starting battery

I have a couple of questions regarding the charging system on my 200. How can I test the voltage regulator ? My tach does not work is it controled by the voltage regulator ? I made a mistake of unhooking the battery with the motor running . Have I burnt up something else besides the voltage regulator ?

You probably did burn up the voltage rectifier/regulator.
