Fuel computer dead? 150 hp '96 efi

Help. My repair guy told me that my merc wouldnt start because my "computer was fried" and said it would be $800 for a rebuilt one. Is there such a thing? Is it a fuel injector control? Help!

They have a ECU (engine control unit) that controls ignition, timming, and injectors and they retail for $1575.60 dollars.
