  • 2000 Mercury 75hp 2 Stroke "bogging down"

    Hi guys,

I have a Mercury 2000 75hp 2 stroke that seems to be having fuel problems and hoped to get some insight as to what may be the problem. To start with the boat idles a little shakey and sounds like it could be back firing every few minutes. Coming out of the hole seems normal but when I get to about 2500 rpms or 20 mph the engine starts bogging down. When I push the throttle down when is starts to bog nothing happens and seems to be starving for fuel and the boat slows down.

I'm not a boat mechanic by any means but it seems like it could be a dirty fuel filter, a clog in the gas line or a clogged high speed jet? I don't believe its a clogged gas line, at least to the blub because is stays hard, seems more like a problem after the bulb. I have tried Sea Foam already.

    Any ideas where to start??

    Thanks in advance!

By backfiring I assume you mean maybe more like a cough or a sneeze?
Try this with it idling right when it sneezes tap the choke and see if if settles down.
Has this motor been setting for longer than 90 days with fuel in the motor?
