  • Troubleshooting Electrical Problems

I have a 1979 40hp Mercury Tiller, manual start. One cylinder has spark the other does not. I am looking for some advice on the process I should go through to find the problem. I've been told the likely suspects would be the coil, or stator. I am a pretty mechanical person with no experience working on boat motors. Even if it is a link to a helpful website, any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Flip the green and green white wire on pwer pack. If the other cylinder starts firing that shows the wiring and coil is good.Flip the brown leads(trigger) and if same cylinder continues to fire the trigger isggod and the switchbox is bad.
