I have a 1994 Proline 231 with a mercury 225 carb 3.0. I am replacing it with a 2003 Mercury 250 EFI Saltwater. The old engine is a 25" leg while the 2003 is a 30" leg. Proline says the ventilation plate(anti-cavitation Plate) should be 3 1/4 " above the keel. The old engine is only 2" above the keel. How critical is this. I would like to install the new engine without removing the spacer and making it a 25 inch leg.

The best way is to set it like the old one, if the old worked then put the new one the same way.Regards
